Star Wars: The Bad Batch will be coming to Disney Plus in 2021

A brand new animated series “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” will be coming to Disney Plus in 2021. The upcoming series will be a spinoff of the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which concluded its run on the streaming platform earlier in 2020. The series will be executive produced by Dave Filoni, who did the same for the “The Clone Wars” along with “Star Wars: Rebels” and the live-action “The Mandalorian.”

The Bad Batch will focus on the titular squad of clone troopers — of Clone Force 99, aka “the Bad Batch” — who were first introduced in the final season of The Clone Wars (which aired as a Disney Plus exclusive years after its initial cancellation). The Bad Batch is an elite group of soldiers who possess unique skills from standard clones. (For example, one has enhanced eyesight, making him an excellent sniper, while another was physically larger with enhanced strength.)

The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose. “Giving new and existing fans the final chapter of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ has been our honor at Disney+, and we are overjoyed by the global response to this landmark series,” Agnes Chu, senior vice president of content for Disney+, said in a statement. “While the Clone Wars may have come to its conclusion, our partnership with the groundbreaking storytellers and artists at Lucasfilm Animation is only beginning. We are thrilled to bring Dave Filoni’s vision to life through the next adventures of the Bad Batch.”

Star Wars stalwart Dave Filoni is among the series’ executive producers, and Jennifer Corbett (of Star Wars Resistance) will be head writer of The Bad Batch. Along with this show and another season of The Mandalorian, there are several other Star Wars series on the way to Disney+. Over the next couple of years, you can expect to see a Rogue One prequel about Cassian Andor, an Obi-Wan Kenobi series (with Ewan McGregor returning to the role) and a female-centric show from a co-creator of Russian Doll.
