Colin’s picks for 2017-18 NFL Week 8

Colin Cowherd makes his picks for Week 8 of the NFL.

People think I hate the Falcons! Not here I’ll take Atlanta minus four at the New York Jets. First of all the Falcons’ offense is second in yards a play over six yards a play while the Jets’ defense is 21st. This is a Falcons team that looked really bad on television. And you know what happens a team looks bad on TV everybody sells it. Sunday night Foxborough they’re terrible! No they’re not better personnel. The Jets can be a little sloppy one of two teams in the NFL that has a giveaway in all seven of their games. I’ll take the Falcons to cover 28 to 20.

ANNOUNCER: Panthers at Bucs.

– I’m going to take Carolina to bounce-back Panthers plus two at Tampa I think they win the game. First of all Tampa’s got no pass rush. Fewest number of sacks in the NFL is Tampa. And that means their pass defense constantly gets exposed. They’ve allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete almost 70% of their passes at almost nine yards a pass! All right they don’t intercept the ball they don’t get to the quarterback. I’m going to take Carolina home field for Tampa is negligible. Carolina wins it 33 to 26.

ANNOUNCER: Texans at Seahawks.

– I’m calling for the upset take the Texans plus 5 and 1/2 against Seattle. All right the Texans can run the football. They’re third in rushing yards per game. Seattle’s running game meanwhile is weak it’s 18th. There’s some three and outs giving the ball back to Houston. And I also think Seattle’s offense this year for some reason has been better on the road. I’m going to call the upset here. I think Houston’s personnel to Deshaun Watson’s legs and arm lot of energy right now they’re scoring when they get in the red zone. Houston 26 Seattle 23.

ANNOUNCER: Chargers at Patriots

– What am I crazy? I’m going to take the L.A. Chargers plus 7 and 1/2 against the Patriots. First of all L.A. has got a real pass rush. Only two teams in the NFL can say this three Chargers have five sacks or more Joy Bosa Melvin Ingram Chris McCain. And Brady has been sacked multiple times in 9 of his last 10 games. And remember this Philip Rivers when he has time can be affected. He’s only been sacked 10 times this year. Patriots win this game. 7 and 1/2 is too many points 26-23 New England take the 7 and 1/2.

ANNOUNCER: Cowboys and Redskins.

– Oh this is tasty. Dallas only has to give up 2 and 1/2? Like it? I love it! First of all they’ve always played very well against Washington. They’ve won 12 of the last 17. And the Cowboys have won at Washington the last four times they’ve been there. And since week four they were sloppy early but the Cowboys are now averaging 450 net yards per game. And the Redskins can sputter offensively. They only have eight 10-play drives this season does Washington. That’s the second fewest in the NFL. I like Dallas to win Washington Monday Night Football on a short week 28-23 Cowboys.

The NFL trimmed the length of its game

National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell announced before this season that several changes would be made to step up the pace of play in games, which had swelled to an average of 3 hours 7 minutes 8 seconds.

Who can afford 3:07:08 to do anything these days — other than sleep or (maybe) work or study? The lack of flow, ruffled by commercials, was one of several reasons that  NFL viewership on television had been slipping even before the national anthem controversy this year.

As NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote me in an email Wednesday: “We don’t want excessive commercialization or a cluttered experience. We worked carefully to study that and figure out how best to reduce interruptions.”

Well, the early game-length results are in, and it seems the implementations are indeed helping — but only a teeny bit. Through seven weeks, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com, an average NFL game is down to 3:06:42, providing the viewer with 26 valuable extra seconds to wash the car on a Sunday.

The average amount of actual action in an NFL game has been calculated to be between 11 and 15 minutes. The other three hours or so are covered by replays, advertisements, color commentary, advertisements, huddles for the next play, and then more advertisements.

“We did a great deal of work on our game presentation with a focus on taking out some of the dead time and reducing the number of interruptions to the action on the field,” McCarthy wrote. “We don’t want excessive commercialization, or a cluttered experience. We worked carefully to study that and figure out how best to reduce interruptions.”

The NFL has tried to sand down the dead spots by having all plays reviewed in its New York office, rather than on site, and running a 40-second play clock after touchdowns and before extra points, not so much to limit the celebrations as to keep things moving along.

There are two fewer commercial “pods”: those (irritating) 2-minute-20-second bunches of ads during breaks in the action.

Eliminating a chunk of commercials altogether, which would most effectively trim the time of games, would seem to be out. Even with NFL ratings scuffling, Standard Media Index reported that advertisers spent $513 million on NFL games in September — up from $504 million in September 2016.

McCarthy said the NFL is studying advertisement innovations, including the “double box,” in which action is carried in one box on the screen and advertising is shown in the other. The double box is used in sporting events with continuous action, like auto racing.

The NBA has added small advertising patches on uniforms this year, and hockey and soccer games carry advertising on the sides of rinks and pitches. With technology creating yellow first-down lines for football fans, it might be only a matter of time until ads are projected on the field — the First National Bank of Gotham first-down marker!

The NFL is consistent, anyway: In every season between 2000 and 2016, according to figures provided by the NFL, the average time of a game was between 3:02:12 (2008) and 3:08:18 (2015). But young viewers in particular don’t want to spend three hours doing anything, let alone watching television.

It would seem as if two and a half hours would be more optimal, if not two hours. The only way to get there is either to use a running clock, as in soccer, or to trim some bottom-line-fattening ads. Maybe Tom Brady could wear a sponsor’s sticker on his helmet, like a stock car.

NFL 18,The crazy numbers behind the Bears’ historically ugly win

The Panthers dominated the Bears in all but two statistical categories. Unfortunately for Carolina those just happened to be the two most important stats: Turnovers and points scored.

Chicago won 17-3 despite completing only four passes and picking up only five first downs the entire game. It was only the sixth time in NFL history and third time since 2000 that a team won by at least 14 points with five or fewer first downs.

The Bears offense was on the field for 21:25. But the defense did force three turnovers and took back two of them for scores. Eddie Jackson scored both of them. He returned a fumble 75 yards for a TD.

Then he one-upped himself with a 76-yard interception return.

No NFL player had ever scored two defensive touchdowns of 75-plus yards in a single game…

Mitchell Trubisky attempted only seven passes. It’s the first time a team has attempted eight passes or fewer since the Broncos led by some guy named Tim Tebow did so in 2011. The coach of that Broncos team? Current Bears coach John Fox who has always loved an ugly game.

Fox might be onto something with his ultra conservative strategy. Check out the numbers…

Keep running that rock and winning ugly Chicago.

Wall Street is squeezed by NFL rating

Analysts are wondering why football game television ratings are tanking this year.

JPMorgan shared with its clients the latest poor NFL ratings data for the football season.”Ratings for the NFL decreased 6% y/y in aggregate for Week 6 with the decline driven by lower viewership for Sunday daytime windows. The late afternoon national game on CBS featuring the Steelers and Chiefs saw a -26% lower audience relative to the same window on FOX the prior year,” media analyst Alexia Quadrani wrote Wednesday.

Quadrani cited how football ratings have declined in five out of the six weeks so far this season. Ratings are down 6 percent season to date after a 12 percent drop last year through the NFL’s Week 6 according to the analyst.

In regard to why the NFL ratings keep falling Quadrani shared a number of possible explanations:

“Theories theories and theories: Chris Simms of NBC Sports Network says the league has made it too easy for young fans to stream condensed versions of games. Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk claims the NFL focused too much on growing the sport outside the U.S. USA Today noted that significant injuries (Aaron Rodgers J.J. Watt Odell Beckham Julian Edelman) are probably not helping ratings. Forbes meanwhile attributes some of the softness in viewership to the National Anthem protests. We note that in Week 6 most NFL broadcasts did not show the anthem instead moving to commercial breaks.”

President Donald Trump has claimed on social media that NFL television ratings are declining due to the controversy over players kneeling in protest during the national anthem.

The weak NFL ratings are forcing Wall Street to reduce its profit forecasts for the owners of major television networks.

Credit Suisse’s Omar Sheikh lowered his price target and earnings per share forecasts for Twenty-First Century Fox citing Fox’s poor Sunday NFL ratings on Oct. 12.

The same analyst also reduced his CBS third-quarter profit estimate by 5 percent on Monday due to its network’s weak Sunday NFL game viewership.

The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Madden 18: Game’s Expectation On Quarterback

Madden NFL is a game which can help everyone realize their dreams. In Madden NFL, you can become the general manager of your favorite team and pick active and legendary NFL star for your team, while playing live game whenever and wherever possible, face to face challenge or go all the way into the American National Football League Championship game. Players will be in the “16 games season” model to compete for the Super Bow. you will keep passion of the game and dominate the offensive, so that your favorite players will run according to your command, or controlling quarterback, Bring your team to the National Football League Championship of the year. Each series of Madden game has been beloved by thousands of players all the year because of its unique features. it turns out that there is no difference for Madden 17. And now, Madden 18 is coming soon and here are the expectations about quarterbacks from gamers.

Take a look at these different highlights of a group of quarterbacks in the league and notice all of the different drop backs, throwing motions, and, especially, pocket movements.

Madden 18

First we have Aaron Rodgers:
Supreme arm talent and a wicked quick release. Drop back is facing forward with a simple back pedal, rather than your typical, “turn to the side” and cross drop back. Also the throwing motion on the run and how the ball snaps out quick and precise. I feel all of these types of throwing motions can be duplicated in Motion-Capture.

Tom Brady:
West Coast offense where Brady is in the gun most of the game. Brady has a quick drop where he crosses once, and usually by then he has he ball out of his hands quickly. With this motion I think it’s important because it’s a release that is “tight to the body” meaning his arms aren’t flailing everywhere or swinging out, his left arm stays tight and his throwing arm doesn’t waste any extra movement. As seen in this video clip:

Ben Roethlisberger:
With this release, Ben has more of a torque in his throw with his body, than Brady, with a similar motion, but a little slower than Brady. His left hand stays tight to his body. Throwing on the run is Big Bens go-to, so simulating his throwing motion on the run, and also the different release timing, I think you could create a very authentic Ben Roethlisberger throwing motion…

Jameis Winston:
Jameis Winston has a release that looks slow, but the throw usually gets to his target on time. His release has a very slight wind up that isn’t a problem, but it’s just his style. This throwing motion can be duplicated well in Motion-Capture. His drop back is very precise. Most young QB’s will have super crisp drop backs because it’s how they’ve been taught. As they get older and more comfortable, they will find a style and rhythm that fits them best, while keeping good mechanics.

Drew Brees:
Brees has a quick release that fits being a shorter quarterback. A precise drop back that stays consistent, and is just a quick snap to his WR. Nothing special about it, but it’s crisp and obviously, very efficient.

As I’ve stated before, I know Madden has some signature motions implemented in the game, but I think this game would take another huge step towards the most authentic sports game on the market, by taking these tips, and this wishlist and putting it into action. I personally thank you for taking the time to read my post.

EA Sports: I’m a 20 year old kid who plays football currently and would love and appreciate it if you considered me to come out to your Madden MO-Cap HQ’s and perform signature motions along with other athletes of your choice. As far as contacting me, I would like to keep my personal info off the internet, but you can message me in my EA Sports account inbox, and I will give you my personal contact info.
