Once you find yourself in the Monastery Barracks, if you’re on the hunt for the Horadric Malus, look for the demonic NPC called The Smith. You don’t have to kill it to get the Horadric Malus, you can run past the monster if you have the armor and healing items to survive. A relatively cheap runeword – if you’re lucky you may get a Sol drop sometime in Normal difficulty – Lore is a helmet roughly on part with the Peasant Crown, having several useful modifiers for casters. To craft this runeword, you will need a 4-socket shield (a Paladin shield, or a Monarch, Aegis or Ward) and the runes Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn. The low stat requirements of the Broad Sword and Crystal Sword make them ideal candidates.

The items are mostly relegated to higher difficulty settings. The Hellforge on nightmare difficulty has a 1 in 11 chance to drop various Runes, one of which can be Sol or the needed Ort runes. The Countess’ extra rune drops on nightmare or hell difficulty can include Sol and Ort runes too.

Arguably the best starter runeword in the game, Spirit requires fairly common runes (you could easily have all these by the end of Normal mode without even trying to farm them) and gives tremendous stat boosts, including +2 To All Skills, +Faster Cast Rate, +Vitality and +Mana. Only a handful of unique/set/runeword items will compete with Spirit, and unlike them, Spirit doesn’t require nearly as much luck or effort to obtain. Every new player will want to seek out the materials to craft Spirit as a vital and enduring stepping stone to better things. Keep in mind that 4-socket one-handed weapons will likely not drop in Normal difficulty – just keep your eye out for them in Act 2 Nightmare and beyond.
